Those THEL's really need a targeting policy that targets the heavy ships first. I've had lots of Motherships sitting there shooting at my base while my THEL's totally ignored them.

Yeah I agree,

I got fed up them targeting the smaller ships, so started using the missiles instead, though these do the same kinda thing sometimes. Kept shifting my defenses around using the 100% refund for un-upgraded turrets, and when the resources dried up I sold up everything and created a solid 'nugget' it the middle to try hold them off as long as i could.

I realised u can build off the map, and then they would only attack you from one direction, so im gonna test this out, see if i can last longer...

I did try that, doesn't help much, since you still need to kill the same number of ships. They are spread out a bit more, so the waves will start to overlap.
I guess it might help against swarmers, as those only attack a small portion of you defences. If all your defences are concentrated on that small bit they'll be killed quicker
